What is a network hop?

A hop represents a single intermediary router or gateway that a packet passes through on its journey from the source server to the destination target.

Why do some hops display stars (* * *)?

Stars indicate that the intermediate router did not respond within the timeout limit. This is usually because the router has disabled ICMP Time Exceeded responses or is configured to ignore diagnostic traffic for security reasons.

What causes high latency at a specific hop?

High latency at a specific hop can be caused by network congestion on that particular router, poor peering agreements, physical distance limitations, or hardware overload.
